Re: What was the last major anime on f!s

The shows that get super popular tend to be heavy on action and kinda of shounen-y (ie the sort of stuff that aired on Toonami)

Like look at MAL's most watched anime versus what's airing right now

The potential candidates aren't that high. Plus most shows are only ~12 episodes, so they can't really build much of a fanbase.

I've been surpised by the lack of impact Owari No Seraph is having.

Thought it ticked all the boxes
- Pre-existing fanbase
- Shounen action elements
- Right level of edginess
- Shipping opportunities
- Cast grown together in a school/training enviroment and go out to face the world for idealistic reasons

I was expecting Kekkai Sensen to be a bigger hit honestly. I mean, Nightow did the source material and Trigun's a fan favorite. Bones is a good studio as well. Guess it doesn't have a lot of shipping opportunity or creative potential, maybe?

You know, I didn't actually know that Nightow did the source, but now that I think of it the character design did look kind of familiar!
The truth is, I think Kekkai Sensen is one of the better shows of the season so far.
I think you're right about shipping potential. There's a bit of ensemble cast going on, and spending a lot of time with different characters. And not sure how I'd go about ficcing for it, since so far it's mostly very chaotic in terms of world and story.

I'm surprised by my own lack of interest on Owari No Seraph, because it sounds like the kind of show I love, but... I think I'm burned out of shounen. And anime.

Years ago I used to watch all first episodes of each season and choose what to watch, then started to depend on recs and now... I'm only enjoying seinen manga and even with those I'm now extremely picky.

I miss being into anime :(

I've seen some stuff for Owari no Seraph cross my dash on Tumblr but it's definitely not as big as you'd expect. Honestly I suspect some of it is that while it hits a lot of fandom's buttons it's a pretty uneven and mediocre series. I was interested enough in the first couple episodes to catch up on the manga and it's just very...okay. Like it's not terrible but it feels like it jumps from shounen trope to shounen trope trying to find one that sticks (first we're in school! Now demon school! Now survey corps fighting vampires!). Plus the way the way the series continually beats the theme of "Family is important!!1!" over the audience's head and a tendency to have characters randomly vomit up their tragic backstories at convenient intervals rather than weaving it organically through the story. Attack on Titan doesn't have the strongest writing ever but it's far better than Owari no Seraph.

Owari no Seraph is kind of bad, though. I think the edginess is actually way over the top, and doesn't actually fit the atmosphere like in AoT. The opening scenes in AoT with the ominousness of the walls, and then the titan showing up was actually pretty well done imo, and raised a lot of questions.
OnS is like... why are there vampires and demons and everything out of the blue??
Also their military doesn't function like a military at ALL, it's already annoying. And the MC is like every shounen trope rolled together and dialed up to 9000.
idk, I was all set to enjoy it, but... I find it annoying and silly.

It's because it's pretty bad. People who read the manga were always telling how awful it was, the anime confirmed it.

I'm surprised Assassination Classroom isn't more popular tbh. Shounen Jump series, large varied cast, a pretty good read and just got an anime. But the english speaking fandom seems rather tiny right now.

I kind of expected Assassination Classroom to pick up the same fans as Dangan Ronpa. Kill your students, kill your teacher, same diff.

They're not really very similar beyond that, though. Assassination Classroom is more one of those inspirational "Teacher turns around troubled class" stories except in this case the teacher is also going to destroy the earth and the students have to try and kill him while learning valuable life lessons.

From this season I can see Arslan picking up once it's got a few more episodes in, with the FMA-esque designs and Daryun and Narsus practically having the words 'ship us' stamped on their foreheads.

DA

I really wasn't looking forward to Arslan, having a mile-wide soft spot for the original in all its kitschy, campy 90s glory, but it turns out I'm enjoying it a lot. Not keen on the FMA-artist same-face thing, but it's a lot more accessible and explanatory than the original.

Not on Tumblr though so I have no idea how fandom's taking it as a whole. A lot of shows with buckets of shippiness haven't even blipped on the radar, so I don't think that alone is make-or-break.
