This is why I have so much difficulty with the topic because I recognize that my proposed solution is so easy to abuse. Not just in terms of history.

But say creationists require that an "intelligent design textbook" be paired with the biology textbook -- which is something I really don't want.

But at the same time, SO MUCH classic literature is very much a product of its time and I feel like it's the type of stuff that tends to go unchallenged.

I think the "intelligent design" argument is a bit different because we're talking about science. I would say the intelligent design book does not belong in a science class because it's not a science book, but if you wanted to argue to put it in the general library, there could be a case for that.

Fiction is where it gets difficult, I agree much classic literature is a product of it's time. I more just wish we would EXPAND what is considered a "classic" and start looking into more authors who were ignored because of there race and/or gender.
