The differences between the different types of Catholics boils down to really two things, 1) Who we see as leader of the Church. Such as for Roman Catholics, it's the Pope. 2) How we say Mass. Roman Catholics perform Mass in the common tongue of the people rather than Latin, which is still used in other factions. And the priest faces the congregation as he says it rather than having his back to them.

There are many other minute factors but those two are the major ones that non-Catholics can easily understand.

I was raised Catholic (Roman Catholic going by what you said), but I was under the impression that that was the only type there was, that "Catholic" was basically just a shorter way of saying "Roman Catholic". I didn't realize there were other types. What are they?

There's The Eastern Orthodox Church. And even that branch splinters down to ethnic groups with Russian Orthodox and Greek Orthodox.

You've probably seen Orthodox priests in movies, shows and online without even realizing what they were. They dress differently from Catholic priests. Though I've seen people mistaken them for both Catholic priests and Imams.

...huh. I always thought "Roman Catholic" was just a longer/more proper way of saying Catholic.

I've also never heard of Catholics who don't think the Pope is the leader of the church. Who do they think is the leader of the church?

TVTropes.

Believe it or not is pretty good about describing different sects. Scroll down to "Denominations."

I already know I'm a Bad Catholic so I guess I have nothing to lose by just confessing that the TVTropes articles on religion are some of my favorite things about religion to read, period.

I was surprised at just how informative and in-depth these pages are - and I just skimmed the surface before pulling myself back to the rest of the internet reality lol.

I really enjoy reading about religion, including the evolution of different sects, classification, etc... (holy shit this is paralleling my love of biology o.O)

I was raised Catholic, and thought the exact same. This is news to me too.

There's also a wiki page on The Eastern Orthodox Church that could be more helpful.

I don't think most people (except maybe themselves?) consider orthodox Christians to be Catholic.
