I would love to hear this elaborated on
In the interest of being straightforward, I'll admit to a bit of bias. The last Neo-Platonist I talked to thought governments should be ruled by philosopher-kings and social liberals must be stopped before they inevitably commit genocide. Also, he hated transwomen, because he was only interested in flirting with women who could bear his children, so he took it as a personal affront when someone who couldn't bear his children had the audacity to look pretty.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 09:06 am (UTC)(link)Ah, haha, really? That guy sounds like a douchebag who was minored in philosophy in college. I was being a little cheeky, I'm pretty sure Neo-Platonism isn't a "religion" these days, but I genuinely personally connect with Plato's work, and many of the Neo-Platonists after him (especially Porphyry!)
And lol there is nothing about transwomen or only women bearing children in Plato. In fact, Plato's Symposium talks about the "superior" love that is gay love, because it's free from any kind of personal desire to have kids. So in that sense it's not a stretch to say loving a woman who can't have kids would be, to Plato, a love free from ulterior motive.
