I think I'm finally starting to understand that while this is what I mean when I say I'm a Christian, other people hear it and primarily understand it as "I'm a follower of the Christian bible". I don't think it makes sense to base it on the bible considering its history and the history of literacy, but at least now it makes sense that people would consider that such an important part of the definition.

Yeah. And to be fair, that gets reinforced by so many Christians being adamant that you have to follow the Bible (all of it) to be a real Christian - no wonder other people think that since our own religion-mates push it so hard. (I've definitely had this argument with a few of my more fundie friends...)

I've had it too. These days I mostly stick to telling them it's not our place to judge these things rather than breaking out the examples of rules they're not following or different ways of interpreting various texts.

You know I've done that and it's like they have a mental block from accepting it. I have one fundie friend who rants about how sinful homosexuality is along with other stuff that's mentioned in the OT. I've asked her multiple times if she eats pork but she never responds. It's like she doesn't even process it. o.O

You're probably taking the wiser path. I'm just so bloody stubborn...

She's basing it on the OT? Most of the ones I know are knowledgeable enough to stick to NT rules since there's a whole book that's mostly dedicated to the question of what to do with the old law now that Jesus has fulfilled his purpose and basically says that circumcision and other old rules from Leviticus and the like aren't necessary (Galatians). If you still want to argue, you could try asking her what she thinks of that book.

Galatians 3:10-14: "10 For all who rely on the works of the law are under a curse, as it is written: “Cursed is everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law.” 11 Clearly no one who relies on the law is justified before God, because “the righteous will live by faith.” 12 The law is not based on faith; on the contrary, it says, “The person who does these things will live by them.” 13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole.” 14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the Gentiles through Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.

She quotes the OT all the time. I know others who do too. I see it a lot and I don't know why it's so prevalent; there are plenty of things in the NT to argue about...lol
