That never got an English release, did it? Was it on par with the Ar Tonelico games?

That part didn't get released here, probably because it was more like a visual novel than anything, but we did manage to get the PS3 sequel, Ar nosurge. That one's a more traditional RPG like Ar Tonelico (and is in fact sort of a prequel to that series).

Ar nosurge's battle system feels a lot like Ar Tonelico 2's (you have an attack phase, and a guard phase where you defend your song maiden), probably because no one really liked the Tales ripoff one in the third game.

What I played so far of it, it was pretty good, definitely a worthy successor.
