Not okay? Seems like a matter of opinion? Here in the UK, cunt is used pretty commonly as "bastard", for men or women, without much of a sexual connotation at all.

In the UK cunt is even used in an affectionate context, which makes it even more confusing.

Yes, but it is still a gendered insult.

It is still the worst curse word in your language, yes? It is equating women's genitals to something truly horrible. You can use it as casually as you like, but all that shows is that you consider the sexism involved in the use of that word to be of no importance.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really? If it's an insult, I don't think it has to be any different than "cock" or "dick". I mean, an insult's power depends entirely on how the culture takes it. Fact of the matter is here it's just to casual to be that bad. And freaking about it is, frankly, pretty damn American.

I'm not saying it's a "good" insult, obviously, but it's been normalized here, so it is what it is and isn't what it isn't.

I honestly can't think of one in the US that's worse...

...well, actually the n-word might be...but it's used by some people in cultural contexts that make it acceptable...I can't think of any situation in which "cunt" wouldn't be considered generally offensive in casual conversation. I mean I see it online all the time and dgaf, but IRL? It's more potent even than "fuck".

(For the record, I'm a feminist and I really don't care if people use "cunt". I use "dick" as an insult all the time, and I think of it as being basically the same thing as far as insults go.)

The worst curse word in my language is Iain Duncan Smith.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-27 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a ridiculously outdated claim. I suppose "cunt" is still obscene among older folk in the USA, but it's enormously context-dependent.

You apparently know little of the US perspective. I'm in my twenties and it is extremely harsh here. You rarely hear it in media unless it's used to show how hard-as-hell characters are.

I'm in my thirties, and I find it a very offensive word.
