Oh man, I might have something comparable! The Salvador Dali On Acid light fixture!

Okay, so back in ye olde 2011, one of our lightbulbs in our ceiling lamp burned out. No big deal, right?

So I replace the lightbulb and turn the light on. NONE of the bulbs light up.

Concerned, I try to remove the new lightbulb, only for the entire socket to come out. It is made of cardboard. It is ROTTING.

This is beyond my meager DIY abilities so I call the land people. Landlord and landlady come up, carrying a baby monitor for their newest landchild, and try to find out what the deal is.

I had already discovered that the pullchain for the light had three settings: bright light, dim light, and off. It turns out that this was NOT an idiosyncratic dimmer switch. It was bad wiring, which apparently the land people had nothing to do with.

What I thought would just be a lightbulb replacement turned into having to fix the fixture's wiring, and it ended with the landlord getting electrocuted, a fuse getting blown, and two weeks of having most the outlets in our room nonfunctional. The land people were PISSED.

D: Good lord. That is definitely something that should have come up in a home inspection. That sounds like the worst thing ever to have to deal with.

Yeah, it was a hell of a mess. It was a house where two people had stayed for years and I was the Johnny-come-lately, which is probably why there was no inspection. I presume the short-term tenant before me, or the tenant before them, got it into the head to "fix" the wiring themselves, and made it a total clusterfuck, but since the light worked, it didn't become clear what the fuck had been done until much later.

Goodness!

I hope you didn't have to pay for the repairs. I mean, I'm sorry for the owners because that does not sound very cheap, but still.

Oh, no, thankfully not! The landpeople took it all; it might've been the law, plus it was very clear that it was not my doing, since I didn't know a thing about wiring and could barely reach the light fixture with my ladder equivalent, never mind futz with the wiring.

Were they able to bill the blockhead that did it? I'm not sure there's any legal grounds for that... :/

I have absolutely no idea. I was under the impression that there had been a good few short-term renters before us (apparently our immediate predecessor got evicted on account of being a fire risk) so it very well could have been any of them. Seriously, why would you attempt to fuck with wiring? That's like, PRECISELY the shit you call a professional for.

The words "land people" and "landchild" made me giggle XD

There's no gender-neutral plural term for landperson! It was the only way I could think of to describe them!

There really ought to be one, too. Lots of people use "landlord" as gender-neutral but that bugs me. I'm female, and if I leased out land I'd want to be called a landlady, because "lord" is a male descriptor and damn it I am not male. (In general the phenomenon of subsuming the feminine into the masculine in an effort to become more gender-neutral is, in my opinion, pretty counterproductive.)

I know, right? And what if someone who's neither male NOR female leases land? They need a title too!

Sure, "land people" makes it sound like they're made of mud or something, but at least people can instantly know what it is!

All landpeople are secretly earthbenders. Headcanon accepted.

I think it would please the land people to think this. ^_^
