12. "Horrid"?! The artist has got her/his own style, which IMHO is a ton cooler than just trying to mimic the original manga's look. If it's not to your tastes then that's fine of course, but you don't need to sit there and be so blatantly cruel about it -- especially considering that your secret was supposedly about her/him being stuck-up.

14. Aw, you shouldn't let other people's opinions influence you like that! Especially when the furry fandom is pretty much at the bottom of the pecking order; meaning that a lot of people make fun of it just because it's "the thing to do". If you enjoyed it, stick with it!

19. Ooo, Dragon Tiger Gate, right? I've been meaning to watch that movie forever now, so thanks for giving me some further incentive ;D

28. This was such a super-cute secret! Thanks for making me smile :)

30. So what if he used some reference for a few panels here and there? Is that gonna make the story and/or the characters any less amazing?

33. Thanks for naming the artist! *will check her/him out ASAP*

38. Oh hell yeah, SNATCHER!

Not the OP, but I think the point is the fact that it wasn't reference anymore, but tracing.

I remember seeing an article on this, but I thought it was really minor and involved the covers only or something like that.

But shouldn't it look exactly the same if it was tracing? If there's enough differences -- which I personally think there is in this case -- then it's reference. But maybe I got the definitions of the words wrong, I dunno ^_^;

I remember seeing some article about it too, years ago. Still, I don't find this to be so bad... It's not on the level of Kayono or anything, if you know what I mean.

Well, I believe this wouldn't warrant a Slam Dunk boycotting or something along those lines, but still, I believe I see the OP's point-- I think we as manga readers believe these people are skilled like whoa, wouldn't need to trace like we humble readers need to when we can't get a pose right. And proof of the tracing kind of takes away that illusion and the respect so... :/

But yeah, it's not as bad as Kayono. Even I can't take the allegations regarding Kayono tracing Calvin Klein ads and magazine ads too seriously compared to the fact that she plagiarized Kazusa Takashima ._.

totally doesn't look like tracing to me. Different shading, backgrounds and stuff... and btw, I know a /lot/ of professional artists who use light tables for this kind of thing. I think the whole "pose theft" scandalz are way out of proportion.

Re: 30.

[identity profile] infected-wound.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if he took the background and everything, it would obviously be very bad. XD

Actually, I don't think it's "pose theft" per se. But bah, now I want to hear professional opinions on this thing :d Something like that 8D

I think (in a legal sense) its okay provided that the photograph the drawing was traced from is not copyrighted. I could be horribly wrong though.

But... it is sad when good artists rely on photo references too much for tracing their art. Greg Land, I think at least, is a great artist! ... When he's not tracing poses from pornos.

I think I remember hearing something about the NBA magazine pics being copyrighted though?

Yeah, I think that's the problem really. They're good. Don't really need tracing D;

I think that the OP means is that the amount of ego displayed in the original post is nowhere near proportional to the quality of the work. It's not about "anime-style" versus "whatever-style," it's about the bad proportions, iffy lighting, funky foreshortening, and crappy linework. Personally, I think that the artist's style could be very interesting, given a lot (a LOT) of work, but it's definitely not "the sexiest thing ever," not by a long shot.

12 OP

(Anonymous) 2008-01-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
That's exactly what I meant. The style's fine, but the artist needs a lot of work on general anatomy before she can start boasting about it being hot. It's not so much the artwork as it was the attitude I was pointing out, though.
