1.) I may or may not do the same >_>

3.) I started growing my hair long so I could braid it like Duo Maxwell. So ha!

13.) "Too dead" had me laughing.

15.) Legible plz :(

16.) Daww Feenie

24.) The thought of there being Transformers smut RP just breaks my brain.

"OH YEAH MEGATRON. OH YEAH. STICK YOUR BIG GUN UNTO ME. UNF UNF UNF"

Jesus Christ >_>

34.) Nia may not be a Mary-Sue, she's just a generally annoying, unbelievable, and plotdeviceish character.

35.) I like those sorts, but I prefer more humanity. Not TSUNDERE, no, but I like characters who can be awesome and kickass when it's called for and then a sort of girlygirl if called for, too.

Like Kaylee. <3 Kaylee.

37.) See 34.

46.) So there's an original story I'm kind of involved with, and in it are two twins, a guy and a girl, who are initially adversaries. They're the sort of twins who are often touching, they've got a sort of pseudo-mental bond, etc. Later, one of them dies, and the other switches sides to make a very long story short. And she starts to respect the hero because he reminds her of her brother and his ideals that he died for.

And for some reason, having someone ship the hero + girl because he reminds her of her brother squicks me out more than someone shipping the twins together. Bizarre, huh?

YAY FOR MAKING PEOPLE LAUGH!

Maybe I should have made them more obvious like...

given "too James Bond" to Balthier, "too bunny" for Fran, and "too grey-haired" to Ashe?

Lol.

See, I have to ask...I get thinking that Nia is an annoying, unbelievable, and plotdeviceish character. What I don't get is thinking that, but then giving the rest of the cast of Gurren Lagann a free pass. They all strike me as over-the-top takes on cliches, and I just can't grasp how Nia is so different and the rest are so much better than her. o_o

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Well, Nia to me seemed the worst of the bunch. She shows up and without knowing ANYTHING about Simon, immediately decides that she has faith in him and she believes in him no matter what. She's known him for what, a few days? And she declares she REALLY KNOWS him.

It's so much better after timeskip because mentally I can fill in the blanks with "hey, they've spent seven years growing together, I can actually believe these feelings have developed and strengthened over time instead of popping out of nowhere."

Plus, it doesn't help that 60% of her lines are literally "I BELIEVE IN SIMON / WE SHOULD BELIEVE IN SIMON / I HAVE FAITH IN YOU" or some variant. >_>

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
But I don't see how that's worse than Yoko meeting the brothers, then being willing to leave behind the village she's known all her life to travel with them after two days. Then, after a matter of days/weeks (the timeline's hard to determine, I think), she's madly in love with Kamina. I personally tend to hold Yoko's character type--the Sexy Tough Girl With A Big Gun--to fairly high standards (although I often love her type when it's done well), so I'm more likely dissatisfied with the broad strokes in which TTGL paints her. This isn't because Yoko is the most annoying, cliched, unrealistic character in the show--just because I hold her type to high standards.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think you're a horriblewrongfan for disliking Nia, anyone more than I'm a horriblewrongfan for disliking Yoko. It just...doesn't strike me as fair to insist that she's objectively the most unrealistic, annoying, plot-device-y character when similar arguments can be made for many other characters (especially the female ones...sigh, Gainax). Granted I've only seen half the series so far, but the parts I've seen include the reasons you cite Nia as being so awful, and I don't find her annoying at all, so. XD

To catch this elusive teal deer: I think that because of the very dramatic, exaggerated way with which Gurren Lagann is characterized, fans' judgments on the characters tends to reflect more about what type of characters they prefer than how objectively well-written the characters are. Because as much as I love Nia, Viral, and Adiane, I will freely admit that none of them are really all that well-written. XD

Well, they were going on to do something (like Leeron said), and it simply didn't seem quite as farfetched for Yoko to go with them because they were going off an adventure than for Nia, within a few days of meeting Simon, to declare that SHE KNOWS SIMON IN HER HEART. And Yoko wasn't madly in love with Kamina--theirs was a protorelationship. She had a crush on him because he was cute if a bit crazy; it wasn't like Yoko suddenly proclaimed that she TRULY KNEW HIM as soon as they'd left.

It was this whole "I just met Simon but now I have faith in him tee hee and really know him and I don't even doubt for an instant even knowing that I was created as a doll by my allpowerful father" attitude of Nia, combined with her voice and SPESHUL eyes that really gets me, I think.

And your last paragraph has a point. (Actually, I think Kamina IS a bit deeper than a lot of people give him credit for XD;)

My favorite characters by the end were Kittan, Rossiu, Simon, Yoko, and Leeron, so you might have a point~

[identity profile] annwyd.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Nia's voice does kinda make me cringe, I admit. But I think her speshul eyes add to her cute character design, so. Personal taste. I personally liked Nia's attitude towards Simon from the start despite how irrational it was, because I was feeling for how broken he was at the time and was happy to see him get someone to have faith in him (there was Yoko, but she was somewhat absorbed in dealing with her own grief/helping keep the Gurren Brigade afloat). *shrug*

And yeah--I'm not sure I'd say Kamina is deeper than a lot of people give him credit for, but certainly I think he's got more layers than the usual "OMG SO GAR BESTEST AWESOME HERO EVAR!!" image of him I see floated in fandom.

Could you please quote the exact line where she says "SHE KNOWS SIMON IN HER HEART," because from what I remember she was very well aware that there were a lot of things she didn't know, and was trying hard to understand. In episode 10 she talked about not really knowing Simon or what Kamina was like, but she stated her opinions based on what she'd seen as an outsider (Yoko even got mad at her for this). As for her faith in him, Simon was there for her from the first time they met and always came to her rescue (or at least tried to), and that was good enough for her.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure exactly what episode it is... I think either 10 or 11, but Yoko (or somebody) asks how she can have that faith in him and she's all like "...because I know Simon!"

But no, I can't quote the exact line, all I remember is every time I've watched the series, it's made me cringe a bit.

3.) I started growing my hair long so I could braid it like Duo Maxwell. So ha!

ME TOO! :D Then I got bored, and settled for having my hair like Edward Elric, and THEN human!Al because my hair is closer to his hair colour.

Could stop stating your hate for Nia based on personal preferences as if it's a hard fact? Jesus Christ.

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
Care to show your face?

I personally don't really like Nia, I think she's awful. I've never once said that other people can't like her by ANY means, and it's hardly something *I AND I ALONE* am guilty of.

So...

...no, not really.

She may be annoying in your opinion, but that doesn't mean she is to everyone. Frankly, I still adore her, despite how 'unbelievable' she is. It's no different, IMO, than how fast Yoko became infatuated with Kamina. :|

Re: 37 OP

[identity profile] cftfic.livejournal.com 2008-01-17 01:54 am (UTC)(link)
And that's completely your right to adore her, just like it's my right to adore Kittan or my friends' right to adore Rossiu.

And... well, like I said above... Yoko never started proclaiming that SHE KNEW KAMINA AND WOULD BELIEVE IN HIM after a few days. She had a crush on him, sure, but that's SO much more understandable and realistic (to me) than declaring you know the true heart of somebody you just met.

Which is why I DID like Nia post-timeskip, because I could go "hey, they've had seven years to grow close and REALLY get to know each other, I can believe this now instead of just seeing it as one big plot device."
