Favourite cliche episodes.

(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
When you watch a lot of a certain genre of show, or read a lot of a certain genre, there's a lot of themes or scenes that keep cropping up. What plotlines/etc do you like no matter how many times you see it?

For example, I will watch the shit out of any show that has a time-loop episode. Some are a little repetitive (TNG's was) but most of them are fantastic (SG1, Eureka). Same for alternate-reality episodes.

I love the musical episodes. Adore them.

Me too! Even when the numbers are cheesy, groan-inducing stuff, I still love them.

Saaaaaaame. I've even watched episodes of shows I don't even watch (BtVS, Scrubs) just for the music. |D

Diaster episodes (earthquakes, etc.) where the main characters are caught in the disaster.

Also, hostage episodes where one of the main cast are taken captive (or someone takes their headquarters hostage) and episodes where one of the main cast is seriously hurt.

Basically, the episodes that can fuel h/c stuff.

Time loops, time travel, alternate universes, body swaps (SOMETIMES), and, my most favorite: bad guys have to team up with good guys for mutual gain (or just mutual saving each other's asses in a bad situation).

Ooo, I do like a good body-swap.

Body swaps are the best when it's a full swap (i.e. the actors are fully acting out other characters).

I get so disappointed when there's a body swap episode but the lines are dubbed over by the original actor. Like what was the point of the body swap then?

Farscape had huge amount of fun with that one

Farscape is always the show that I think of when I think great bodyswaps.

I love Halloween episodes. Maybe it's because we don't really celebrate it.

Me too! But because I love Halloween. I also love Christmas/holiday episodes.

I like Halloween episodes too, especially in my crime drama shows. They get so creepy!

Yes! Serial killers in masks / someone dying the way they would in an urban legend are fun to explore in fiction.

Me too! I love holiday episodes in general, but the Halloween ones are the best. Partly because I like creepy things and they tend to be more creepy.

Alternate realities, time loops, alternate futures, alternate dimensions, 'what if?' scenarios - anything like that.

First, yes! to the SG1 time loop episode. Just rewatched that episode yesterday. So awesome. I usually don't like time loops, though, precisely because they get repetitive most of the time. SG1 managed not to.

Mine are:

1. Musical episodes
2. Holiday episodes (especially Halloween, but also Christmas)
3. Storytelling episode- where character(s) are telling the story of what happened and we see it on the screen.
4. Parody/crack/humor episodes- I like them 90% of the time.
5. Another POV episode- where we see the story from the perspective of a different character than usual.

The one special episode type I hate 90% of the time is the documentary ones. Where a film crew is filming the characters for some reason. The only one I liked was the SG1 season 8 one.

Body swapping, especially if it is a genderbender episode. I know they make T* activists squirm, but I'm T* myself and I love them. I love the goofy comedy that comes with them and I don't care.

Bottle episodes. Cheap and easy and character development for daaaaays.

Rashomon-style plots. Each character tells their biased version of the story.

ooo I love a good Rashomon ep. Every show from CSI to the Odd Couple has done them but i love them all.
