Birdman
(Anonymous) 2015-04-28 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Birdman
All through the movie, Riggan is indulging in various fantasy sequences that the audience is consistently cued into being completely false and in his head. The angry taxi driver, Riggan being shown tearing apart the room by hand, etc. Those are presented as reality. In these fantasy sequences, Riggan is embodying the Birdman persona, these sequences also have the character breathing down his neck usually. During this the Birdman tells him the narcissistic truth, that he's REALLY bad at this serious stuff and should just embrace being Birdman full time, where he is a God or whatever the fuck. This is in contrast to reality, where Riggan is constantly being demoralized and torn apart by other people. So think of it as two threads trailing through the movie, fantasy and reality, and in the end they finally meet. You know they meet because someone else besides Riggan actually experiences the fantasy, or seems to. Riggan seems to be flying, because he's embraced the "truth" Birdman espouses. At this point, Riggan has gotten what he wanted, critical acclaim for his work, but by getting it he realizes he didn't want it/doesn't like it/etc. The fantasy has become reality, to escape the emptiness of a world he doesn't belong in (the stuffy world of Real Art), Riggan has become Birdman, and escaped into narcissistic Lalaland to avoid the humiliation of accepting the truth. In the aftermath of Riggan waking up in the hospital, he's very quiet (I don't believe he has any lines), so this whole scene - and the fact that his bandages look like a superhero mask - finally cue us into Riggan's mental state, and also the final message of the movie and feelings of the director.
That message is "superhero movies are stupid you're all stupid nerds for liking them JUST LIKE THIS FUCKING LOSER... I'M AN ARTIST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
So you weren't missing out lol.
