Mercedes Lackey

(Anonymous) 2015-04-29 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
I worry about her. She is pretty much the last of my child idols I feel comfortable reading. After the MZB thing I am honestly terrified of my old bookshelf. I don't want to lose her too, I want some books I read as a kid to still be readable without feeling icky. I know she has dipped into the libertarian rabbit hole, but so far it seems it is not so much supporting their causes, but more supporting the principle of free speech while deploring some of the things said. I'm not sure that is a wise position, but it is better than the alternatives for doing so. Please don't let her turn out to be a monster too, please?

Checklist of authors I can no longer read:
OSC (homophobe)
Arthur C Clarke (moved to Sri Lanka to be closer to his underage house boy)
MZB (child molester and arranger of child molestations)
Piers Anthony (creepy, creepy, creepy)
Tolkien (Racist)
Brian Lumley (Homophobe and constant retconner)
Anne Mccaffrey (homophobe)
Louise Cooper (safe?)
Mercedes Lackey (safe?)

That is not a good list.

Well, Louise Cooper is dead, so she won't be starting any crap. I loved the Indigo books, so I'm right there with you hoping her memory stays good.

This was a story published by The Mirror in the UK, and later retracted on the grounds that it was false. He was gay (he called himself "mildly cheerful") and did move to Sri Lanka and live with his Sri Lankan partner, but he didn't meet Leslie Ekanayake until after he moved there. Leslie was not a "houseboy", he was a diver.

Only on a fandom comm will retconning be up there with child molestation and homophobia.

Depends how bad the retconning is.

I don't think "racist" is a fair descriptor of Tolkien.

"Has racist undertones in his work and a poor understanding of colonialism's benefits to England" is fair, but I agree that "racist" isn't.

IOW was an Englishman in the 1920s and 30s. Right up there with "all white people automatically suck".

I think it might be time to work on your expectations for people.

She used to be one of my favorite authors, but I remember going back and reading The Black Swan (Formerly my favorite book of hers) and realizing that Prince Siegfried was an actual rapist who basically gets away with it, it's basically ruined forever. What the everloving hell, Lackey.

Haha, there is a long tradition of discussing whether an artist's person should be considered part of the art they make and I can't give you a single perfect answer. But it is a fact that very few crime novelists are murderers, while there are confessed murderers that have made truly classic and gripping art.

Better let the art live it's "life" and the artists live theirs without mixing them up too much and allow yourself to don different viewing lenses while absorbing different aspects of art. You'll probably enjoy both more.
