Wow. That is not an okay thing to say to anyone.
I'm so sorry you have to deal with any of that. It sounds like a bad situation.

I hope things improve for you. Please don't hesitate to get in touch with local services that provide food to people for free. One I used to volunteer for was very welcoming to new clients who weren't homeless, but we struggling with living costs. I'd say maybe 40% of our clients did have somewhere to stay, but couldn't afford to buy food. We often served people in expensive business suits who were employed but struggling with debt (usually gambling) and family groups who were having financial trouble for short periods. Sometimes we'd get people coming in when they got back on their feet to thank us and volunteer themselves. In the whole time I was there, I never saw anyone turned away or chastised for eating. The only problems we had were people coming in either very intoxicated or high, and we always tried to box up food for them if we had to ask them to leave.

I think the only thing we've been worried about with this sort of thing is that my sister is on a special diet (low sodium for congestive heart failure) that could be hard to cater to, and we don't want to take food that she can't eat. Though I suppose I could eat that food and we'd then just need to budget for her needs.

We've gotten rid of a bunch of bills so we're just down to rent (which covers gas/water/electric/trash too) and internet (which we need for my sister's job), but she's had to work so much less because of her medical condition this year.

Sorry. Rambling.

Don't be sorry!

That's a pretty good idea. I'd ask anyway, because they might be able to accommodate special dietary needs. I think meals on wheels here might have options for that because they serve a lot of seniors. I'm not sure.

If you're stuck on bills, you can always call them and say you've had an unexpected expenditure this month and ask them about payment plans so that you can keep everything running until things are back to normal. They're generally pretty keen to keep their customers if they think they'll continue to be paid in the future.

Don't put your health at risk if you can help it at all. I know it's easy to think "I need to pay for this and I'll worry about myself later" but you don't want to get sick now, especially if your sister is already having health problems.

Take care of yourself, anon. I hope your situation improves soon.
