Dissapoinment

I've just found my favourite artist from years ago that I admired very much. She was just 2 years older than me, and to me was the epitome of talent, an inspiration for me. When I find her again on deviantart now all I can see are conceptarts for games with the same cutesy styled girls with big boobs and impossible poses. She's still very good, her techniques and coloring are great. But every other piece is the same thing you can find in every corner of the internet. There's just no originality in them anymore.

I know that I have no right to judge her, maybe it's the easiest way to get a job and get paid, maybe she just likes that style better now. But I can't help to be dissapointed. She was the reason I try to get into my university. This is the most dissapointed and upset I've ever been.

How about you, F!S? Anything happen recently that have you dissapointed even though you know that you are an ass for being so?

This kind of reminds me of one of those infographics currently floating around Tumblr that tries to explain how your own skill at art and your critical eye/appreciation for it increase and plateau at opposing times.

I wonder if you're seeing this person's art now via you yourself being at a more advanced level with the craft than you were years ago?

I'm a writer not an artist, but I've found that fics I used to admire greatly ten years ago are much less impressive and intimidating for me now, because during those ten years I've worked hard to increase my own skill level which, as well as the actual writing part, involves analyzing and critiquing stories to see how they work. So now I reread those fics and while they're still entertaining, they're not the "Omg I'm never going to write something this perfect!" anymore because I've learnt enough to see they're not, and never were, perfect.

Maybe she's stayed stagnant, or maybe as you say she's catering to a specific market. But maybe it's also that your perception of her art has changed, which could also be a sign of how you've improved as an artist yourself!

She does improve a lot though. Like I said, her skill is very great. I don't think I can ever be as good as her technically, but you are right that my taste had evolved since then. Now that I look back her art really hasn't changed much idea wise, mostly character portraits and that's not a style I like anymore, not to mention I've learnt a lot about gender since then. Techniques wise she's a thousand time better than me.
