A special interest, as something that you want to learn more about and become proficient in as a part of your life (but not the entirety of it), is something good. An obsession is something that takes over your life and causes you harm. A special interest can be harmful if the person becomes too fixated on it, but it isn't inherently so. It all depends on how the person handles it.
