Re: Since when do people say obsession is bad?

It's like they were saying above, I think this has become a semantics issue. It's hyperbolic to say you're "obsessed" with a show/game/pairing/etc. when what you're actually describing is an intense interest or a passion. Obsession, by its nature, is invasive and uncontrolled, and often disrupts daily activities.

As an example: imagine you're driving your car, and a song comes on the radio that makes you think of a pairing you like. You daydream a little. However, a car makes a sudden stop in front of you and you slam on the brakes, preventing an accident. That's the hyperbolic "obsession"-- enjoying thoughts about something you love, but being able to snap out of it in a split second if need be.

In a situation of genuine obsession, you don't see the car. You don't really see the road, either. You might as well not even be in the car, because your brain has been completely co-opted by overwhelming, repetitive, invasive thoughts-- sometimes even about something you technically enjoy, but sometimes not. It's a complete shutdown, and it's scary. Real obsession is a horrible thing to experience.
