Ugh, THIS. I know it was more of a reboot than a remake, but Curse of Chucky was so damn awful without the fun. I hated that they retconned Charles Lee Ray into a ~crazy grimdark murderer~ when he was originally a remorseless douchebag murderer. The CGI looked awful. The original 80's doll was silly looking, but so much better than Ronald Mcdonald with botox. (I will admit the Andy camaeo was kind of worth it. The Tiffany one made zero sense though)

...what's the difference between a reboot and a remake? /not a movie buff

A remake is a retelling of the same story, whereas a reboot is taking the same concept but not the same story. It's a reboot because it takes place long after the first movie (Andy is an adult) but was meant to bring Child's Play back in a 'darker' way. (They didn't want the horror/comedy label anymore)

Sometimes reboots are called re-imaginings, IIRC. I suppose it's like the difference between Universal's Dracula film and Hammer Studios' Dracula film. (IOW, this is in many ways nothing new.)

Half agree with you here, if anything I thought Curse was much closer to the original Child's Play than any of the recent sequels? I didn't think it was super great or anything, but I definitely liked that the went back to a more "serious" approach instead of keeping with the way things were with Bride and Seed (the less said about Seed the better D:).

Child's Play was always kinda cheesy, but looking back on it, it took itself a lot more seriously than any of the sequels ever did, I think?

I kinda liked that they tried to make Curse fit in the timeline with all the other movies (except for Seed, which was conveniently ignored, eh), but yeah, the changes to Ray's background story were kinda meh. Didn't mind too much because it was nice to see Dourif play the human character again though.
