In certain types of renal disease, the pressure natriuresis relationship is altered so that the kidneys retain more sodium and water at a given pressure, thereby increasing blood volume. There's also Macrocytosis, a blood condition where average red blood cell size is increased.

Endurance exercise, such as jogging, swimming and cycling, increases your blood volume over time.

(It can also increase with pregnancy.)

I wonder if he's large enough that all of that (except the pregnancy bit, probably doesn't apply XD) could really boost his blood volume up to that level.

I really don't have much idea, but it kinda grosses me out and fascinates me at the same time.
