lol, for years I wrote on a machine that had only a dial-up connection to the internet, and it worked just fine. Please explain how your writing would assuredly suffer (and if that isn't melodramatic, I don't know what is) if you didn't have fast internet access. Unless you're doing heavy-duty research while writing, you would probably get more done if you had no internet access at all.

Yes, for years I wrote on an old computer with only dial up as well, that's how I know that not having to do that is better. I do research for my writing, because some of it is historical in nature. Researching online is a snap when you have a reasonably up to date computer and a decent internet connection, and without it, my work would be full of laughable inaccuracies. I'm not sure why it's melodramatic to say that my work would suffer. I'm not speaking for anyone else, obviously, though I find it curious that several people claim to know my work habits and results better than I do.

Is it easier and pleasanter to do research on a computer with a fast internet connection? Sure. But do you need a fast internet connection to do research? Not really. Besides, you still haven't addressed the point that most people with computers have myriad uses for them besides writing fic. Art supplies can only be used to make art, and once the art is made, they have to be replaced.

Didn't know my tablet had to be replaced each time it was used, which is what most people mean nowadays about "art supplies" when it comes to digital commissions.

Good point, but we're still talking about a pricey tool that has a fairly narrow range of applications, and it takes time to master that tool, that could be spent doing other, potentially more profitable things. Whereas I can write fic on the computer that I can also use to email my folks or run GIS or do my taxes, or construct and run a simulation model of a wastewater treatment wetland for my homework. (Also to waste time on F!S and play Minesweeper.) It takes minimal skill to use Word, and most of us already use it for other purposes; we don't need to acquire any special computer skills to write fic.

Tablets will still wear out eventually with enough use. I've been using the same computer for eight years with no issues. My sister (who does digital art) has gone through three tablets in that length of time simply because they wear out and become less sensitive.

So do computers, tho. So the logic is the same. A tablet is going to last a long time if you don't toss it at the wall regularly. The pen nib wear out, but those are five bucks for a pack.

Wow, you poor dear! How did people manage to write books in the days before tip-of-the-finger research and computers, it simply boggles the mind!

Maybe they *gasp!* actually went out and read other books and spent hours gathering their information! Maybe *gasp!* their work didn't suffer at all even if it took longer to produce!

But I wasn't saying anyone else's work suffered, only that mine would. You seem awfully angry about this, anon. You can write however you wish, whether it's with a fountain pen and a leather-bound journal with multiple trips to research libraries, or with a Macbook and a high speed internet connection. I don't mind what you do because it doesn't effect me, you see. You should do what works for you.

Yet you seem terribly bothered by the fact that I prefer to do my writing on a computer with a good internet connection. Why is that?

LOL, no.

The difference between writing in a computer that has 3GB of ram and one with only 348MB is BIG.

Programs crashing, backups failing and such are more likely to happen on an old computer.

Also dial-up also means any necessary research can take longer than normal, etc.

And you know what? All that affects writing.

Oh please, tell me all about the terrible haaaaaardship of writing on a computer that isn't absolutely state of the art!

You may not need the BEST and NEWEST stuff, but denying old computers don't cause serious issues is pretty ignorant of you.

I already lost count how many files I have lost thanks to software freezing and crashing unexpectedly and the subsequent corrupt files.
But I guess you think it's ~wonderful~ losing a week's worth of writing thanks to that.

I had one of those ancient computers, dear. I thought it was the greatest thing since sliced bread at the time.

Also, I learned the hard way to always back up my work to a separate disk.

I HAVE one of those (and I can't afford to change it :D) and really, not being able to keep a browser and a word processor program at the same time is annoying, same for having to convert files like docx in another computer before being able to access to them here, etc.

Old computers have many disadvantages and those do affect writers, so let's stop pretending that's not the case.

You know, nobody is even saying that old computers have no disadvantages compared to new ones. I'm saying that it's pretty far-fetched and melodramatic to claim that your writing would "assuredly suffer" without a current computer, so your readers should be compensating you for the costs of that current computer. Even if fanfic is only one of the dozens of things that you use it for, and you would probably have that computer even if you didn't write fic at all.

It's not a real Internet argument until someone says "dear".

Because those things don't happen on newer computers?

and you're still pretending that the computer you use for fic isn't the computer that you probably already have anyway, to do your homework or use for email and social media.

Tablets also have more than one use, so why fanartist NEED to have the best stuff, while fanwriters have to deal with it?

Exactly. Oh, goodness, I remember back in the day when I'd back up my writing on floppy disks and the terror of corrupted files and lost work! Now I can back everything up, upload it elsewhere and store it online. Documents can be shared with my editors with a few clicks of the mouse, word processing programs do so much more now and you can even track edits and embed comments. It's fantastic, I'd never want to go back to the "good old days".

Neither would I, but the idea that you can't write without current technology is pretty eyeroll-worthy.

As is the idea that you need digital tablets to make decent art as well. What are we even arguing about?

No one said they need it; only that work would suffer without it. Artists can use their finger on a touchpad and MS Paint to art too. Doesn't mean their work wouldn't suffer.

LOL, no, not if you don't treat your computer like shit and perform regular maintenance like defragging on it. I've had computers last for well over a decade without any sort of problems like the ones you're describing. My current laptop will be seven years old in a couple of months and it still runs perfectly.

Seriously, writing on a Windows 1995 is not that hard. I used to write novel-length stuff on them. Should you back up stuff? Yeah! Which is, by the way, easy and cheap to do these days. You don't even need to go on the Internet. Research? You could always go to a library, which, by the way are free (and usually have free computers to use, too).

I mean shit, people have been writing for thousands of years.

In fact, I think writing on older, slower computers is easier for me because I can't get distracted by the Internet... especially not videos, music, etc.
