By your logic, if I draw a fantastic painting of Achilles slaying Hector for someone, I deserve no pay because I'm "using someone else's world and characters!"

Are you purposely being obtuse?

There is a massive difference between something that's copyright and something that isn't. When there's an author who OWNS work that they've CREATED, and they are making money off of it, then no, you don't get a free piece of the pie.

No one owns the Trojan War story. It's a legend. Who exactly would you be imposing on for painting a picture of a legend?
