Just looking at one author in my fandom they charge $3 for 500 words or $10 for 2000 words. Most fandom writers probably don't get THAT many commissions, at least from what I've seen in my fandoms. So is that enough to make a living? At most it's enough for some pocket change.
I can understand if your making fandom related stuff to sell in an online store or at a convention, some people have made really cool things. But as far as fanfic goes... with sites like ao3 or tumblr where people who are amazing writers are constantly taking free requests and BEGGING for prompts, what is the point of paying for it?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-01 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)It's not a good analogy though, because this isn't a zero sum game. Fandom is huge. 99.999% is free for all to enjoy, and chances are there'll always be more free content than paid content, and again, I stress: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR FANFICTION OR FANART BECAUSE IT IS NOT AN OBLIGATION. If other people choose to do this, it's no skin off your nose and it's silly to pretend otherwise.
