To be honest I think most "fan" shirts of anything, anime or otherwise (western shit included), look silly on adults. High school, whatever. College, you can pass. But adults? idk you have to be really stellar at playing it down and work it as fashionable to make you not come across as a loser or one of those fans.

But I mean you can make it work. I've seen it working. But it just usually doesn't.

You seem to think that we want it to work. Maybe we want to be one of those fans.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I assume most people who wear them are proudly showing their geek pride.

But that doesn't mean it doesn't usually look silly.

One man's "silly" is another's "omg I want one!".

I'd rather look silly than put untold effort into an outfit with some matching dress pants, shirt - blazer combo thing, that's just too much work for me.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 07:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I wear geeky shirts because I like them, I don't give a crap how it looks to other people. I'm definitely not concerned with being "fashionable".

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's fine? I wasn't contemplating the reasons why people wear them, I just think they look dumb.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 10:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Jesus, everyone who has replied to you sounds pathetic and is proving your point.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
for real though, like i get not caring about being fashionable, but there comes a point where you look emotionally stunted

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
emotionally stunted is a little harsh, no?

i just think they come across as too young/teenager-ish. myself, i could never wear them, because i'm 4'5 and would literally look like a teenager in them.

shirts with pictures of softcore porn or ~mystical~ wolves on the other hand... yeah, i judge people who wear them.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually pretty apt here. You can tell that people here are self conscious about their fandom wear because they're really defensive when it's brought up that it doesn't make a good impression, but trying to play it off like they don't really.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Mystical wolf shirts are the best. Screw you.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Mystical wolf shirts (and other apparel sporting Native American imagery) are always sported by white trash, male AND female. Females will take it a step further and combine it with Angel imagery.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
sorry people don't want to dress boring

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
that's like saying sorry your music tastes suck because you don't listen to nerdcore

Where's the line for 'fan' shirts though? If I wear my The Pandorica Opens exploding TARDIS shirt is it a fan shirt? If I wear my VAMPS or Acid Black Cherry concert shirts are they fan shirts?

They're comfortable and (to me) attractive shirts. Why shouldn't I wear them because I'm an adult?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-02 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
didn't you get the memo in the adult handbook? fun is for youngins only!!

THERE WAS A HANDBOOK? UGH! Why did no one give me a copy! No wonder I'm doing everything wrong. :(

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
Because it means you're emotionally stunted. And by "emotionally stunted" we mean "actually having emotions other than withering disdain and overweening fear of other people's disdain".

Considering how universally accepted sports fan t-shirts are (as one example), it seems more than a little strange to me to point at other fan shirts and say those are silly or mean you're "emotionally stunted" (... the fuck?). No, it's wearing something that shows you like that movie, TV show, video game, whatever... same as how wearing a sports t-shirt shows that you're a fan of that sport or team.

I don't wear a lot of fan t-shirts because the textures are usually icky to me, and the collars are often uncomfortably close to my neck (V-necks all the way!), but I love my Seanan McGuire Slasher Chicks tanks and Wicked Girls t-shirt. (She went out of her way to find a company that makes very high quality, soft shirts that come in a wide variety of sizes. Unfortunately, due to assholes who can't read and repeatedly nagged her friends who act as personal assistants when she'd been very up-front that this was a side project that came second to her contractual obligations and convention appearances, she's had to stop doing them. Thanks so much, jerks. Glad I got several while they were available.)

Damn, there go my Harley Davidson and Red Sox shirts...

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
I wear enough uncomfortable "adult" clothes to work during the week, thanks. I'm wearing my comfier t-shirts with fun pics on them whether you think it's stupid or not.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 08:59 am (UTC)(link)
lol I love these defensive replies. You can look stupid and obsessive if you like, I don't think there was a law against that being proposed?
elialshadowpine: ([whedon] pathological idiot)

[personal profile] elialshadowpine 2015-05-03 10:57 am (UTC)(link)
... and you're not being defensive here? Before calling others stupid and obsessive, you should invest in a mirror.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Okay, you keep wearing your boring "adult" clothes, and I'll keep wearing the clothes that make me happy and we'll agree to disagree. :)
