There has been this whole kerfuffle in the Silmarillion fandom lately with someone claiming their interpretation of a relationship as abusive is canon and then complaining that the crack of that ship was excusing and romanticizing abuse.

Which, I will say that I think there are some people in the fandom who take the crack too seriously and as canon. But other than that, it was just this whole ridiculous argument and the fandom went a little wild for a few days.

Deets? Was it Angbang or something?

Yup. Angbang. Which, as some people pointed out, canon says nothing about. The two things we know: Sauron was Morgoth's most faithful servant, and Luthien was able to use the threat of telling Morgoth that Sauron failed him to make Sauron flee. Abusive is a totally legitimate interpretation, but not the only one.

But someone decided to post a rant about how it was clearly abusive in canon, how the crack shipping was excusing and romanticising abuse, and how everyone should be enjoying the ship only the way they enjoy it. And then every time they got a response, they dug their heels in deeper.

Good god, I hope the fandom doesn't get saddled with abuse wank bullshit too.
