My mom watches the show and hasn't read the books. You know why she hasn't read the books? Her native language is Spanish and she still has an easier time hearing English than reading it. She doesn't have time to dedicate to parsing an English-language book series as big as ASOIAF.

Every time I see book readers complain about show watchers, I have to sit on my hands to keep from ranting, especially when there's a language barrier.

(trufax: GoT's appeal to her is that it's essentially a more violent telenovela with better production values)

Translations of books are a thing that exists?

At least in my country about half of those active in fandom who've read the books did not read them in English. When there's a new book out they have to wait a couple of months longer, but that's not stopped them from participating in fandom so far. *shrugs*

If only books were translated and published in other countries! It's such a shame that we can only read books in their original language.

Whoa dude, not everyone has the time (or ability!) to slog through a big series like that, regardless of language. Before GoT came along, my mother wouldn't even touch fantasy. I'm not going to push her into something that will make her lose that little spark of interest.

A+ assholery, though, good job.

But that wasn't the argument Anon responded to (albeit it in not a very friendly manner, granted). Your argument was that people don't read the books because of a language barrier when translations into many languages are available.
