Back in the day, HIMYM was in constant threat of being canceled. So they wrote and filmed parts for the ending in advance in case they ever had a last season. So the ending was all written in 2006 long before a lot of character development ever even happened. In fact, the mother was supposed to be Victoria. The thing that gets me is he didn't even edit it. Like, there's very basic continuity errors all in the finale which make either several of the earlier seasons wrong, or the finale wrong. (For example, in 46 minutes Ted says "Robin traveled the world, but was never alone." And Lilly and Robin are shown being friends when they would've been distant in Bad Crazy.)

According to the Showrunners, there were two endings filmed and they chose one because it was harder hitting. However, the showrunners are actually pretty notorious liars. Just before the ending someone asked what would happen to Barney and Robin and they said "They've been through so much, you can rest easy."

Some people theorize the Alt ending was edited together as an asspull move to try and help out DVD sales.
