Ahhh, seems Walter Breen was associated with sci-fi fandom, and wrote for fanzines, but may not have been published for sci-fi otherwise. My mistake.

Yeeeeah, Breen is far from the only one, which is really sad. And reading about how many times dude got charged before FINALLY getting arrested, only to pretty much kick it immediately, is pretty disheartening.

As far as I know, Breen only was published in nonfiction and fanzines (which were basically fanfic). I am curious as to the author of the story mentioned, if only to make sure I don't ever accidentally pick up his work.

Yeah, and if you read the "Breendoggle" accounts, it is explicitly stated that many people in SFF fandom knew that Breen behaved inappropriately with children, and the community leaders basically told parents that they wouldn't kick him out of the group, and that the parents should be responsible for keeping their kids safe. There is a lot of evidence to show that people were aware of his predilections, and in the depositions, MZB confirms that she knew about more than one victim, and that others did as well, but no charges were ever filed, and he was never banned from conventions or the like AFAIK. It's pretty damn fucked up.

Enh, that doesn't really surprise me. Most people who rape children get excused and covered up for for years, even as the evidence mounts up. It's pretty fascinating to watch and learn about, if horrible and tragic.
