Spartacus

I love historical, especially this era, and heard the drama was pretty good. But I also heard that it was really gratuitously bloody/gory, and sexual (which I don't mind, provided that the guys are sexualized as much as the women). I don't like gratuitous gore, but then someone told me the violence/blood is a lot more 300-esque, very cartoony, which doesn't bother me at all.

Is it any good? Anyone recommend it? I don't know much about the story itself.

I watched the first season and enjoyed it. It's been a long time since then, though, so I can't remember much besides I enjoyed the melodrama very much.

there is sooooooo much fan service involving the dudes. it's pretty great. the show actually gained a very significant gay following partly because of it.

ayrt

Is there any gay romance or sex in it? That would definitely be a plus for me lol

These two! They're adorable.

And there are other gay characters and couples too. Not a ton but way more than I've come to expect from most media. They have sex scenes like any other couple.

The men are pretty much always half naked and do indeed get naked (and rarely hide the goods), so if that matters to you...you'll love the show.

But tbh, I thought it was great because it was very entertaining and the story and characters were actually really complex and intriguing, so I'd recommend it just from a storytelling standpoint. I mean, sure, it's ridiculous, but in a satisfying way.

And sold! Thanks. :D I wasn't even anticipating any gay plots, and I usually seek media out especially that has them. I'll give the series a shot! I saw that Netflix has it so seems like as good a time as any to check it out.

Ooo, I didn't realize that it had been added to Netflix! Now I want to watch it again. Hmm.

I hope you like it! It's only three seasons long (a little over 30 episodes, I think?) so it isn't a major investment, but it spends what time it has wisely. I should also mention that there's a mini-series (set before the beginning of the show) called 'Gods of the Arena' that's also worth a shot.

Eh. If you like a lot of blood, gore and random sex and rape scenes...
What turned me off this series in the end was the way I felt every episode could have been at least 20 minutes shorter if they'd cut back on the slow motion effects a bit. It's absurd, really, every second cut, stab and OTT blood spurt is in slow motion. It got on my nerves so much.
Also, if you watch it, don't get to invested in the actor who plays Spartacus in the first season.
