Oh, haha, no, we never really got bit by a shark! That's just the story I plan to tell people if we ever get asked.

And yeah, that's actually pretty normal for a bilateral mastectomy. Here's what it looked like a week post-op. (Warning, there be gnarly blood and stitches!) And here is what the scars looked like a year after. It's been three years since then, so the scars have gotten a little thicker, but that's about it.

Haha, that's an amazing story. I don't think many people have an IRL story more exciting than that, so at least it's original and exciting!

OMG when you said gnarly blood and stitches I didn't want to look (wounds freak me out, okay?) but that's actually less dramatic than I was expecting? Granted I'm sure it wasn't fun to experience (and it was probably painful and uncomfortable as hell), but I'm glad it wasn't worse. It sounds like there weren't any serious complications (which is what I always worry about when I think of surgery) and it doesn't look bad now! (Or, well, then.)

Yeah, it wasn't SO bad, really. The drains were the worst, but they were out after the first week. That said, the pain actually wasn't too bad, and I healed really well. Parts of my chest are numb, but considering what it was like prior, I find that a massive improvement.

And now we have badass sharkbite scars!

Parts of my chest are numb Oh no :( That's unfortunate, but if you're happy that's what matters! I'm glad it worked out. (And that it wasn't too painful. The worst injury/procedure I've had was a small cyst that needed to be extracted, and that took about a month to heal. That month seemed to stretch into forever for me because I wasn't used to bandaging anything, so any larger procedure or injury makes me wince.)

It's okay, that's totally normal! I knew going in that I was going to lose a lot of sensation in my chest. And seeing as my chest used to hurt a lot, trust me, this is WAY better. It's not a huge deal; I still have some sensation. Like, if you push your hand against my chest, I might not feel it against my skin, but I can feel the pressure. And pain can still transmit, though it tends to get communicated as a weird burning sensation. I hope to get my scars tattooed one day, but want to find an artist who's experienced at inking scar tissue first.

It took me like two months to recover, but it really wasn't too bad, all things considered. Best $10K I ever spent, for sure. Totally worth quitting school for.

You know, that's a pretty cool idea. (Which I wouldn't have considered.) If you're into tattoos (I like the bit of...bird? I can see on your arm!) and don't want the scars to show, that's a clever plan. I wish you luck in finding an artist capable of it!

We actually have gotten more since that photo was taken. We have two birds (those you can see) and underneath them, we have kinda sideways ladders. (They look like this, one on each arm.)

I don't plan to hide the scars, but accentuate them. IT WILL BE AWESOME.

That's a cute design! I like your style. (I've always loved tattoos but I'm too scared to get one.)

Even better! I'm sure there's loads of cool ways you could accentuate a scar with a tattoo. I'm sure loads of people have done similar things but it slipped my mind.

Thank you! I designed the ladders. ^_^ Rogan designed the birdies. We'd always wanted one, but it tends to be a big donnybrook getting everyone to agree on what to get. Soooo worth it though!

I looked out of curiosity since I'm not familiar with masectomies at all - and honestly, I'm impressed by how natural the second pic looks - maybe it's the lighting, but I can't really see the scars at all.

Also, thanks for sharing that! And if you ever get to use the sharkbite story you should tell us. XD

Yeah, I had really good results. I was pretty lucky, though I definitely sacrificed sensation for looks, in this case.

My scars are pretty visible, but they aren't bad. You notice them, but they aren't glaring; they get thicker over time, due to the tension of stretching, but they also get paler. And I can do everything I used to without pain, which is awesome.
