I did like that about Twilight and I genuinely enjoyed Leah as a character (especially when she antagonized everyone else even though we were clearly supposed to view her as being in the wrong a lot of the time) but I'm still really bitter about the fact that the fourth book had Leah questioning her status as a female werewolf (or shifter, or whatever the hell they technically were) by talking about how she's stopped menstruating and is unable to bear children now that she's able to shift into a wolf form and wonders if she can even be considered a woman anymore because of it. I just...why?

For the same reason the vampire chick couldn't give birth either. Only Bella got to be special.

Twilight is written by a Mormon lady?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Why the question mark? She is, though

Because I can't remember if mormon were big on procreation or not.

Also they believe that everyone who will ever live already exists in some kind of spirit realm and they only get to come down to earth when a woman gets pregnant and makes a body for them, so having babies is a serious religious deal for them.

I used to work with a Mormon woman who constantly forgot that I didn't have kids.

Ugh, that scene. It's not really surprising to me that Meyer equates being able to bear children to being a "real" woman, but it was just such a jarring moment that felt shoved into the story for no reason. When there were similar scenes with Rosalie, it at least made sense for her character because it was used to explain why she hated Bella for being so eager to give up her humanity (I mean, yeah, it was still annoying to read about and I kind of wanted to bang my head against a wall but it was an explanation at least and clarified her motivations). With Leah though, it didn't really add anything to her character and I don't think it was ever even mentioned again in the story. It seems like it was just there to...make us like Leah less (if we're supposed to agree with Jacob's disgusted reaction at least) or something? idk man

Only hot mens reporduction matters. Good thing shifting doesn't affect them at all! Werewolf/Shifter virus is some kinda reverse Parthenogenesis I guess?

But... in a pack only the father and mother of the family breed...?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-03 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
na

That's not really how Twilight packs work...not everyone in the pack was blood related and there was nothing said that indicated that any of the males would have difficulty getting women pregnant

Oh I know, it's just that she acts like it's in her ~wolf nature~ to breed to be a real pack member. While it's not the case in wolf packs.

But guess her werewolves are Native American Mormons.

That may be a thing in general werewolf lore, but I don't recall anything of that nature in Twilight. In fact, it's pretty heavily implied that the pack members will start families with whatever women they imprint on regardless of their status in the pack (this is another thing that sets Leah apart from the other pack members. It's either implied or outright stated, can't quite remember, that she's unable to imprint on someone the same way that a male shifter would be able to because she's a woman)
