Not a troll, just someone who took French at a young age, liked the French pronunciation of Xavier, then saw the X-Men movies and got very confused.

MAN, this thread got way more response than I was expecting for what was mostly supposed to be a silly secret.

Well, OP, Wikipedia is totally on your side. See here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Javier_(name)#Pronunciation

"English speakers, unfamiliar with names beginning with 'X', sometimes pronounce 'Xavier' as 'ex-avier'. This pronunciation is sometimes used for fictional characters, such as Charles Xavier, leader of the fictional X-Men."

I love how (1) this implies "ex-avier" is WRONG WRONG WRONG, and (2) the author of this paragraph didn't bother to spell out the (presumably standard/correct) English pronunciation.

Here's a non-Wikipedia link about the different ways to pronounce it, if that helps. There's even a different way in Portuguese! :D

It's because you phrased the secret like there was only one option, rather than it being your personal preference. Not surprising that people reacted so strongly.

Well, I dunno if English is your first language or not, but that is how we pronounce that name in English... and always have. Also we don't always pronounce things the correct way, like the word foyer or any word in Japanese that should have an "n" sound that for some reason was given a "m" sound instead, like tenpura/tempura and senpai/sempai.
