I think "Xavier"/"Javier" (pronounced in early modern Spanish) was a Spanish form of a Basque name? And then it got altered in French, and then the English form is partly based on the French?

I don't know, really.

yeah, originally it's from navarra, pronounced chabiEr. χa'βjɛr. though before that apparently the Ch was softer, more like "SH". I found the origin on the german Wikipedia page for the german name "Xaver", which is a variant of xavier

I thought the x in that period was sort of like English sh, but I wasn't sure.
