Martial arts thread?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-04 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
What martial arts have you done, F!S? Which forms would you recommend?

I've done some wushu and some kickboxing. I would really like to do some more, and my university has loads of clubs, but I've never straight up been in like a dojo before.

Any recommendations for a martial art that doesn't feel like you're joining a cult? (Like please no class introduction, every class, that is offering thanks to the creator of the art.)

Have you found that doing any kind of martial arts has filled other gaps in your life? Like, is it fulfilling creatively, spiritually?

Arnis de Mano (which is Philipine stick fighting) and some rudimentory hapkido.

Where did you learn arnis? Was it a class or did you learn on your own or...?

MMA classes are pretty chill in my area. No prayer to the sun or whatever. Just a big sweaty bro fest. No obligation to be at every class. Just pay when you show up.

I've hated every type of class I've taken at a martial arts specific dojo. Too formal, too many hidden costs. Women only self-defense was an experience I can't say I ever want to repeat. Ever.

Boxing at the PCYC and MMA at the dance studio/multi use gym were the most fun. Once the guys get over the whole "I can't hit a girl" thing.

I wouldn't say spiritual, but I always felt the good kind of sweaty and shaky afterwards.

I've got a black belt in Chun Kuk Do, which I took from a small school held in the teachers' home. Lots of personal instruction, inexpensive, not remotely cult-like, haha. I'd love to get into tai chi next, because gracefulness is my favorite part of karate.

I think the key to finding a school that suits you lies less in the type of martial art and more in the specific classes and teachers. Go watch a bunch of different classes until you find one that excites you.

I've done: kenjutsu, karate, aikido, Tai Chi Sword, iaido, a tiny bit of Muay Thai, fencing and MMA. And Tae Kwon Do as a kid in an after school program if you want to count that.

I know what you mean about the, err, cult-like atmosphere. Though that's not the word I'd choose, I'd call it more bureaucracy of sorts, all that ritual respect and honor. Honestly, you're probably going to get that in any East Asian discipline. That's pretty much core for anything Japanese, Chinese or Korean.

The most chill ones I've done have been more "western" or international - as though you're training with a coach for any sport. MMA and fencing. Very fun, doesn't feel so strict that you feel you can't say anything out loud ever during the class at risk of breaking social order. My Muay Thai class was also more "western" feel, but I don't know if that's typical.

As far as spiritually/creatively fulfilling, I think that ultimately depends on the class. I'm just doing MMA now and I have to say I kind of miss the beauty of the East Asian arts. MMA is mostly just about sweat, grit, and attack. Well I mean, theoretically you can bring any martial art into it, but just how we train in class. I don't think it feels as spiritual as say, my kenjutsu or aikido classes. That being said, aikido verged on being too spiritual, too technical and not combative enough for me (since I'm really interested in actually learning how to defend myself and be a successful fighter).

But anyway, it's always going to depend on your teacher and the particular class, and you can't judge an entire art on one class alone. I'd shop around - most places are happy to set up a trial class, or at least let you sit and watch. Find a few different places and see which one appeals to you the most.
