How do you deal with extreme stress? I'm honestly so stressed at the moment, between exams and papers and work and money and my upcoming bar exam, that I actually passed out today and I can't stop shaking. And I'm so stressed I can't sleep the few hours where I have time to sleep, which isn't helping. I'm barely functioning and I don't get a break between now and the end of July.

I don't know if this will help, but try screaming into a pillow or something? Full on shrieking. It will make you feel silly but it'll get rid of the physical jitters. The silliness might help to break yourself out of the 'everything has to be done now' mood, too.

do you have any family/friends around? When I was super stressed out about my engineering exam, working six days a week, going to class at night after work twice a week, I'd ask my mom for help. She'd make sure there was food in the fridge for me and generally just check in. In the midst of it, I asked her to do my laundry right before because I just didn't have the energy to do it.

Is there someone you could ask to help with something? Just to help out a bit, even if it's a friend coming over to cook dinner and distract you for an hour?

Not really. My godparents are here. Maybe I'll ask if I can come over for a meal.

I've been eating out way too much because I have no time to cook. And not even good eating out. Just whatever random junk I walk past.

That's why I suggested eating with a friend because a homecooked meal is way better for you and if you eat with people you like, the meal is generally more pleasant.

For the studying, I always do better when studying with a group. If I was at home studying, I would get distracted with the Sims, so I'd force myself to go somewhere else to study.

I'm the opposite on studying. I don't find group studying helpful, and studying anywhere but home I find other people distracting. At home I can balance my studying and take computer breaks if I need it, but I can focus much better.

Exercise. Or I pet my cat.

Me? Alcohol, or valium. But those aren't necessarily a good idea.

It would be worth asking doctor for some kind of sleeping medication for short-term use so you go actually get the hours of sleep you have time for, though.

Also, boost effect of your breaks. If you have time for a relaxing bath, put relaxing oils in it, do deep breathing while you're in it, etc.

Honestly I'd collapse without meds, but they're not an option for everyone.

Exercise, exercise, exercise. Get outside and talk a walk on a regular basis. Seriously. It will both give you that feel-good endorphin rush and will let your mind relax a bit so you can actually absorb the information you're trying to learn.

SA

*take a walk, not talk a walk.

This. Take a long walk, burn off that anxiety.

Exercise, masturbation, and showers are the most immediate source of stress relief for most people.

Longer term relief? Plan. Whip out a word document and start making schedules, list due dates and assignments. That way, instead of thinking "I have to get 2 final exams in, 4 30-page papers, and an art project in by July" you can see "Ok, first deadline is May 30th, must have in History of Calculus paper".

Breaking it down makes it more manageable instead of a giant pile you have to look at. It gives a sense of control (for me anyway). I used to do an overall due date list as well as creating a weekly To-Do list based around my work schedule, with the amount of reading or writing I would get done that day.

Try to get as much time off work as you can and if you need to call off and can get away with it, do so.

Seconding the recommendations for walking. Sometimes it's the only thing that helps for me. For sleep difficulties, you might have good luck with valerian, a fairly harmless herbal sleep aid. And maybe carving out a little time for relaxation at the end of the day, with a cup of chamomile tea or warm milk with honey.

Good luck!
