There's a short story anthology called "War Stories" - it's sci-fi but (I heard) fairly realistic. I liked it a lot.

Oh, I'll DEFINITELY check that out. You wouldn't happen to know of anything longer though. I'm really looking for a long story (though, preferably, not an enormous series or something incomplete).

Hmm, one of the authors in that anthology, Karin Lowachee, has a book series that may count more or less as military sci-fi. It's one of my favourite book series ever, though I don't know how realistic it is (I know she did a lot of research on child soldiers and other sensitive subject matters for these books). The titles of the books are "Warchild", "Burndive" and "Cagebird".
