dreams

when you dream, are you always yourself?

are you always your race or gender or age?

i'm not, but i'm interested whether other people are always something relevant to their identity

yep

Nah. I've been all sorts of things in dreams. I was a dog once or twice.

I dunno lol. It doesn't seem to have much to do with my identity, just with what I ate before bed.

I'm always me, but often I'm younger or dreaming about earlier times in my life.

I think most of the time I'm me, but sometimes I'm a character or person from something else who doesn't necessarily have anything in common with me. I like to think I'm the only person in the world who has had a sex dream about being Thomas Jefferson.

I don't know, to be honest. I don't really see myself in my dream. And most of my dreams involve me being chased and murdered, so I don't got time to look in a mirror.

It's probably about 50/50 whether I'm me or someone else. I think I tend to always stay a woman but other than that I never know what I'm going to get.

I usually inhabit the same general space in dreams--limbs the same length, eyes the same height from the ground . . . Features can vary, though.

When I was very young, I would sometimes dream about being a bird, but it was always in third-person POV, watching from outside the bird's body.

when you dream, are you always yourself?

Yes.

are you always your race or gender or age?

No, no, and no.

I'm not often in my dreams at all - a lot of them seem to be observing a story playing itself out, like watching a TV show.

On the few occasions where that isn't the case, then I'm usually me, though how that presents itself within the dream I have no idea. I feel like me, but that doesn't necessarily mean that's what I'd be seeing if I was seeing me from someone else's POV.

I am usually myself, or sort of myself, I think. I probably do bleed into "some other protagonist" sometimes and not remember. Like I mix up a story I'm reading and then I'm the lead? Maybe?

What version of myself I am probably depends on how close to a waking mind I have. Am I remembering my real life and trying to reconcile that with the dream? Or am I not really thinking that hard?

And I suppose sometimes I do just dream like it's a story I am following or writing or rewriting.

I am probably more likely to remember dreams where I'm myself, though. Like one where my father turned up alive for some reason and I yelled at him.

Sometimes I'm me, sometimes I'm a younger me, and sometimes I'm a guy (IRL, I'm a girl). When I'm a guy, I'm usually older than I actually am.

I was also a ghost in a dream once. I died, and came back as a ghost, and some girls weren't sure whether they believed in me or not, so I starting picking stuff up while invisible, so it would appear to float in the air.

no on all of the above.

I'm most often a guy in my dreams, which is probably the most usual difference.

I've also dreamt I was Mario once...that was weird.

I'm not even me half the time.

Re: dreams

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
No. I'm not always me -- sometimes I'm a generic viewpoint character with no identifiable traits, occasionally I'm a specific viewpoint character, usually an identifiable fictional one. Sometimes I'm me. Sometimes it switches randomly.

Nah, sometimes I'm other people and sometimes I can barely tell.

I think I'm SOME version of me the majority of the time, but sometimes dream!me and real me don't have much in common, lol. And there can be a lot of wish fulfilment going on there, when something isn't going horribly wrong.

(The last dream I remember was being in an elevator with Steve Rogers and nearbought swooning when he called me ma'am. He noticed my thirst and smirked. It was a simple but lovely dream.)

Nope. I'm all different sorts of things. I'm men a lot in dreams. I'm usually taller and have longer hair. I've been all different races in dreams. I don't usually know what age I am in dreams. If I'm conscious of my looks, I'm usually skinnier and prettier. And 90% of my dreams have me involved in one or more fandoms.

Sometimes I am myself, and sometimes I am someone else who is magically me in my dream. I always feel like myself, but the outward appearance and gender can change. It's never something I take note of in the dream, just when I wake up.

No, I'm frequently someone else. Sometimes a different gender, age, or race. I've dreamed I was a fictional character before. Sam or Dean Winchester most often, but also anime characters.

I'm not sure tbh, sometimes I definitely know I am, other times I'm not, it really depends on what the dream is about.

Before coming out, we were NEVER ourself. (Any of them.) It was always a random character generation. Age, gender, even species was pretty random.

Once we came out, though? We pretty much always dream as ourselves, or the vessel, sometimes a weird combo of the two. (For instance, I might be walking around multi like we usually are, or I might have my own body and be walking around with other folks. Plus we have some shared lucid dreaming control, which can be a ton of fun.)

Sometimes myself. Sometimes...not? Neither physically or indream-mentally. Ie one time I was some mad god demon. Another time a horse doing boring horse life things, a young boy sneaking into army etc

My dreams are basically just stories in 1 st POV

Re: dreams

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always me. Same gender, race and the age I am at the moment of dreaming. Sometimes this is really strange, especially if everyone else in my dream are talking animals or something.

Re: dreams

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Mine tend to be split 50/50 as far as whether I'm 'myself' or not. IRL I'm a mid-20s woman, but off the top of my head in my dreams I've been: a young boy, 30-something man, an old woman, David Bowie, a fish once, and a column (lol yep).

I'm not sure if I've ever been a race other than white in my dreams...for some reason that never comes up. It's interesting what -doesn't- happen. For example, only in the last few weeks have I ever experienced the sense of smell in-dream.
