My gripe is people saying this happens when it doesn't. Because they're confusing "being excused" with "being liked" or "being felt sorry for."

This. Characters are complex (usually). They have layers. Liking them doesn't mean you are excusing bad actions. And there are different levels of horrible and different layers to characters. Even the worst characters usually have some good feature to them, and bad guys generally are more interesting when they are complex.

Really? I think it's a little disingenuous to act like this doesn't happen all the time. Not just in fandom but the entire world. Sure there may be a group of people that know better but the vast majority of people do respond to cheap appeals to sympathy and they've kind of ruined it for everyone.

No, they really didn't.

Nah they have, sorry.

You either live under a rock or are so swept up in denial that you've actually reached Egypt.

Evil little shit-stains that are/were frequently defended by their delusional fans because of their ~tragic~ backstories:

Loki (Thor/The Avengers)
Grant Ward (Agents of SHIELD)
Hannibal Lecter (Hannibal)
Regina Mills/The Evil Queen (Once Upon A Time)
Mr Gold/Rumpelstiltskin (Once Upon A Time)
Damon Salvatore (The Vampire Diaries)
Klaus Mikaelson (The Vampire Diaries/The Originals)
Tate Langdon (American Horror Story)
Guy of Gisborne (Robin Hood BBC)
Sylar/Gabriel Gray (Heroes)
Walter White (Breaking Bad)

I'm not even including the "anti-heroes", like Severus Snape, Draco Malfoy, Rorschach, Spike, Chuck Bass, and Eric Northman. But lol, good luck convincing their fans that those characters are anything other than misunderstood woobies.
