student loans question

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Has anyone ever applied for or had Income Driven Repayment for student loans?

Called my loans holder and guy swore it was my best option (opposed to deferment or forbearance) since it would be beneficial to my credit report. But I find it hard to believe they are looking out for my best interest.

I have not applied/had those, but a good resource to search is /r/StudentLoans.

If your locality allows it, and you are not overly worried with your credit rating for the next ten years, pay off your non-defaultable student loan with a credit card and then default on that. It'll trash your credit rating for ten years, but so will massive student debt. This way you get to dump a millstone debt onto a credit card company who can afford the hit.

You should probably not default immediately, though. Otherwise they could hypothetically prosecute you for fraud (because you never intended to pay).

I did and it has been a lifesaver! And after 20 years my loans will be forgiven. I know 20 years seems like a long time, but I have so much debt that I will probably never be able to pay it off. Stupid grad school....
