Uhhhhh... so tell them about the potential triggers?

I don't see the dilemma here.

Rape and sexual assault comes up a surprising amount
And not in a "durr hurr rape is hi-larious!!1!" way. It's treated as really disturbing in the show itself.

There's also an attempted rape scene that gets surprisingly graphic for an animated "comedy" series.

Elaborate please? This sounds really fascinating (not in a pervy way, just in a theoretical way.)

na

There wasn't any nudity or anything, but it was this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zE-_yGucEf8

It was surprisingly disturbing and pretty jarring. The description on the video link says "Very funny" but uhhhhh, I don't really agree with that and I don't think it was intended to be funny. Morty is genuinely shaken up by it and even Rick, who is kind of sociopathic a lot of the time, acts nicer towards him afterwards and later kills Morty's attacker even though he doesn't know exactly what happened between them

What are the triggers you have in mind? *is curious*

I really want to recommend this show to people because I really enjoy it (and I'd love to have more people in the fandom too)

But I would feel obligated to point them in the direction of sites that would list all of the triggers on the show.

And before anyone claims I'm being oversensitive, this show can get pretty fucked up and I can think of people I know (that have roughly my sense of humor) that would get uncomfortable (like anxiety attack uncomfortable) during some scenes.

I was thinking something along the lines of, "Do you ever need trigger warnings? Because if you don't, you'll looooove this!", but that doesn't actually set the tone of the show beyond being a shockfest, which it is but also isn't (it's rather very heartfelt).

It's dark, for sure, but I would say it's somewhat safe to recommend to folk who enjoyed Futurama and/or Venture Bros. Morel Orel too I hear, although I have yet to watch that one. If you can make it through an episode of Family Guy, or South Park, without feeling the need to campaign on a blog about how you were unprepared for cartoons meant for older audiences, then yeah. You can probably watch Rick and Morty.

Oh man, Morel Orel didn't fuck around. A lot of the episodes made me genuinely sad.

There is a world of difference between cartoons for adults like Bob's Burgers and tastless shitfests for 'adults' like Family Guy.

As is between all of those and Rick and Morty. If your point is that you thought "older audience" refers to a bar of quality, that's on you. FG, is pretty much what you see is what you get. However, Rick and Morty isn't for everyone if they can't get past the obscene and black humour (like with Bojack Horseman, it doesn't pull it off for no reason). So it's not really the first thing I would rec for someone into BB.

Yeah, I think that's OP's problem. Giving out trigger warnings without making it sound like a total shockfest.

Yeah, I was thinking of comparing it to Moral Orel. I think there's a lot of similarity tonally in the way they mix fucked-up humor with earnest fuckedupness (and sometimes earnest sincerity).

I like Venture Bros and Futurama, but I really, really, really do not like Rick & Morty.

It's not a guarantee as much as a suggestion. If it doesn't work for you, it just won't,and that's no big. My little sister for instance loves Futurama and Rick and Morty, but she'll nope out of the room if asked to try more than an episode of VB.

Now that I think about it, I totally forgot to mention Superjail as one of those shows that might tell if R&M would resonate with them.

Yeah, it's a really good show, but there were DEFINITELY parts that made me feel legitimately uncomfortable

It's no-fucking-around dark. Not grim, just fucked up.

Is it me, or do they look like Doc Brown and Marty McFly?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
this is intentional. it was originally inspired by "The Real Animated Adventures of Doc and Mharti" which was a back to the future parody

All I know about this show is that there's a 13-year old girl that ships herself with the old guy (and also, Shrek), and draws ton of mpreg art of him.

Holy shit, that crap's gotten outside the fandom?
After I binged the first season I scoured the internet for any sign of fandom and came across that...

Haha, yeah. I found out about it because I follow the Socially Unacceptable Art tumblr blog, and her art has been posted there....leading to tremendous and hilarious buttrage from her. (I do feel bad for her, being so young.)

I'd probably go with something like "Hey there's this show I really like but it has some pretty fucked up stuff in it." Then if they know they have a trigger they have a warning to look up more or avoid it without you going too overprotective.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-10 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
My trigger is such that I don't want to look it up. I'd rather not research it, because it's uncomfortable. Literally no one even thinks of it as a trigger.

It's common in Robot Chicken, it's happened in Game of Thrones, Mad Men, and my favorite comic book, but it doesn't even have anything to do with sex or violence. :/
