Manipulation is most definitely how sociopaths act. Doing so via charming (or in this case 'nice') behavior or flattery for their own personal pleasure or gain is also a known trait.

"Manipulativeness: Frequent use of subterfuge to influence or control others; use of seduction, charm, glibness, or ingratiation to achieve one's
ends."

You might want to tell the APA they're wrong, then.

That's not the point. The point is that manipulating someone does not automatically make one a sociopath. You can't point to a furry paw and call someone a wolf, when they might well be a cat, a rabbit, or ...well, a furry.

And that's not what OP's saying. They're saying the behavior in the quote is a sociopathic trait ("this is how sociopaths act"), not that everyone who does it is automatically a sociopath.

Except that's pretty much exactly what people do when they say "x is what ~psychos do~". It's the internet equivalent of facebook moms crying Sick whenever they see something they disagree with or the layperson's litany of "get help" for innocuous, normal behaviours.

I think my hateranon has found the thread though, so we'll see how many more comments I can reply to before someone starts telling me to die or something lol.

If someone says "sweet and juicy are what good oranges taste like", they're not saying only oranges (and no other fruit) taste sweet and juicy. They're saying that "sweet" and "juicy" are two traits of a good orange.

LOL, no, facts are never the point with you, are they? Unless they suit you, that is.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what your original post was, though. It was "that's not how sociopaths act."

You're kind of moving the goalposts as the conversation goes on.

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
why is everyone on f!s now constantly talking about goalposts

(Anonymous) 2015-05-08 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
we fucking love football

I noticed this, too. I think herpy didn't read the secret quite thoroughly and maybe commented too hastily.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-09 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I did it on the other secret I commented on today too, as someone else pointed out.

But I swear the point I was trying to make was a good one.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2015-05-09 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
You're right. I should have been more clear with what I was trying to say, because if you take my first comment to mean sociopaths never manipulate people then that statement is false.

I should have instead said, "That behaviour alone is not enough to qualify someone as a sociopath, because non-sociopaths and people with other disorders also act this way."

I can't brain today, I guess.

Fair enough. *nods*
