Without getting into a long-winded rant, that sort of behaviour probably falls into the lower end of the antisocial personality disorder spectrum; people with the level of recognition of social cues and emotional intent necessary to manipulate others might not qualify for the usage of the term.

It's also falling out of practice to categorize people with ASPD as separate from what used to be termed sociopathy and psychopathy, but I do still know of some pretty respectable individuals that separate the two, so ...eh. The debate is ongoing as to how to categorize these things.

My point is that that kind of social manipulation isn't just automatically something only a sociopath would do.

Well yeah, but nobody's saying only sociopaths engage in social manipulation.

Yeah, I seem to have gotten myself into an argument of semantics by accident here (which is my own fault).

It is kind of oddly evocative of the real life debates that go on around this topic in psych circles though, so I guess I really shouldn't be too surprised.
