I've heard arguments to either side of this debate.

Personally, I think it still has useful classification purposes to separate the two, but imho if we're going to put Asperger's under the umbrella of autism spectrum disorder, we might as well categorize ASPD as a spectrum disorder as well.

I expect we'll the majority rule in the next DSMVI, though.

That's right, ASPD is probably better classified as a spectrum disorder. I do kind of want to argue that this goes beyond the DSM. Psychopathy/sociopathy will probably always be diagnosed with other diagnostic tools unless there are major revisions to the ASPD in the DSM (which there won't be in a long time).

I think it's a very nasty thing to try to diagnose and I'm very glad I'm not in a position to have to take it on, honestly. There's just so much legality and stigma and misinformation even in psych circles, that it's just a beast to try to really understand the disorder even with years of study.

So yeah, you're probably right about that. No one is going to be making many strides (though there are a few people trying to) with a condition that is marginalized to the extent that ASPD/DSPD/sociopathy/psychopathy/whatever terminology you're using is at the moment.

Very true. This is why I'm actually against the ASPD diagnosis being used as a stand-in for psychopathy because there is so much stigma against being psychopathic. The thing is, only a small percentage of people who get diagnosed with ASPD would actually meet the diagnosis for psychopathy, but they still get the stigma of being "psychopathic". And this is only one reason why these two diagnoses shouldn't be conflated with each other.

I see the logic there, and I don't entirely disagree, but I do think there might be some weight to making it a diagnosis for legal purposes rather than medical ones... if you follow. I don't necessarily think that there's a different neurology or mechanism to the diagnosis of psychopathy than there is to ASPD spectrum, however it does (usually) rate as something in more urgent need of care than the average diagnosis.

But that's the whole problem with this nest of snakes here... there are too many politics involved to really go about the business of making the right decision for the people who are actually affected. It sucks, really, because the current system is just not satisfactory, but like hell it's going anywhere any time soon.

I think I'm following! Honestly, if both ASPD and psychopathy were treated as spectrum disorders it would probably be a great step forward for both diagnoses both from a legal standpoint and a medical one. But at this point, they're both not. Here's to (hopefully) seeing a change in the DSM in another 10 years.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I think it's heading that way.... but we'll see. It certainly would make things a lot less shitty for people with so-called low risk conditions who have to suffer because of media sensationalism.
