We sort of already have it, just not enough of it. USGOV already participates in some measure in the economy, such as Medicare, because President Johnson didn't want to leave seniors to the whims of the market. The idea is that the economy would be mostly capitalist except when the profit motive requires hurting people. In other words, human need over human greed.

Nobody's going to be hurt by, say, consumer electronics, being a completely private industry. But when you privatize parts of the economy that should be managed by the government (either on a local/state level or a federal level) that inevitably means people get screwed over. We've already seen this with private prisons and corporate involvement in education and health care.

The other problem is that of the free market itself. I like the free market. I love it, even. I think it's a grand idea. I like it so much I want regulations in place to make sure it stays a free market. By some standards, that's socialism.

That's interesting! Thanks, dethtoll. We don't know very much about economics, so that was really informative. ^_^
