Idiotic (seemingly trollish) question about trans folk

(Anonymous) 2015-05-09 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
So here's my question.

If someone is exclusively attracted to men and transitions from a man to a woman, they're considered straight, right?

I just want to be sure.

Yes.

Okay, good.

I'd been stressing out about it.

Thanks.

Well yeah. If a trans woman is attracted to guys, she is straight.

I suppose there is some gray area in defining the physical experience as "gay" or "homosexual" if she was not physically transitioned and had a male body, and had sex with a guy. But if she identifies as female she probably wouldn't self-identify as gay, even if she were having "homosexual sex".

Then again, she might, since transgender issues tend to get lumped together under the headline of "gay".

Sometimes it depends on how that specific person identifies themselves. For example, I think I recall that Bruce Jenner said in his (he mentioned that he still wanted to be referred to with male pronouns until he finishes transitioning, so I'm not deliberately misgendering or anything) Diane Sawyer interview that he considers himself straight even though he identifies as a woman and is attracted to women (although, like with his pronoun usage, he may choose to identify as a lesbian when he's further along in his transitioning, idk). Generally though, yeah, someone who is MtF and is attracted to men would be considered straight

I really don't believe Bruce Jenner is trans at all, especially since he conveniently came out about it right after causing an accident where he killed people.

except Bruce filmed that interview long before that accident happened

Not by gays and not by straight men.

DA

I highly doubt you credibly speak for gay people if you refer to them as "gays"

Generally, yes. Just like how I'm a trans guy exclusively attracted to dudes, so I'm gay.

That's what I was told. I was also told there were a lot of misconceptions about transgendered folks and not to feel bad about asking seemingly obvious questions about stuff. It's not a well known population.

Eehhhh, you gotta be careful with asking questions. Some people don't react well to that at all.

No, they don't. I was very fortunate in that my friend realized that we lived in a relatively conservative city without many opportunities to meet transgendered folks. She was very forgiving about my stupid questions.

It's complicated.

She might consider herself queer, she might consider herself straight. What sexuality someone identifies as is a pretty individual thing.
