Well, McKellen is still alive and still adding to his back catalogue, especially with the kind of movies people like us are fannish about so he's got an advantage. Whereas Gielgud's been dead for years and was better known for his stage work than TV/movie (although according to IMDB, he's done shitloads). I've never seen anything he's been in but he's one of those faceless legends from a previous generation. It's not really fair to compare them.

Sir John Gielgud was the Pope in Cate Blanchett's Elizabeth and the voice of Merlin in Quest for Camelot for two recentish movies of his. Although, my favorite role of his was Cavagnari from Far Pavilions
