Honestly, I can see why people think that way, but there a lot of songs he sings that only can get away with, BECAUSE of his voice. They'd be waayyy too maudlin if anyone else sang them. And then of course there are his crazed carnival barker songs, which no one else should dare cover.

I think that's why I was so galled by Scarlett Johansson's cover album. Like, seasoned , legendary musicians like Bruce Springsteen, Rod Stewart, Johnny Cash, Joan Baez...they can sing a cover of Tom Waits' songs. Neko Case, Diana Krall, Norah Jones, yes. Scarlett Johansson??? Does not have the music cred to pull that off. Ughh.

YES THIS. Minus Rod Stewart, who I will never forgive for mangling "Downtown Train."

Also Marianne Faithfull. Her cover of "Strange Weather" is equal to the original IMO.

Waits can con me out of my pants with "Step Right Up."

I think Lady Gaga could do a passable Waits, provided that none of her studio crew get involved. Give her a microphone and a piano and she's at least 100% better than any of her studio tracks. I think Springsteen might have wanted to be Waits but had to give it up because he was hurting himself. The band that needs to cover Waits is Shovels and Rope.
