Is LJ safe?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-11 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I know lots of you don't agree but Livejournal still works really well for me and I'd like to keep using it. But I'm concerned about the fact that they are now owned by a Russian company. I'm not too concerned about the content on my LJ being leaked or something since I'm fairly careful about what I say but I did once pay for a paid account that can be traced back to my real name (way back when it belonged to the original creators). It's the only place on the internet that has that connection, and I use my fandom name everywhere.

Basically, does anyone know anything about LJ's situation in this regard? I know it's dying but would it ever fold under completely and does Russian law allow for publicizing information like my real name? Or did they even send my name over when the transfer occurred?

Hasn't LJ been Russian-owned for a lonnnnnnnng time? I honestly don't know the policies on holding information, but I remember the Russia wank from ages ago, and that being one of the driving forces behind the mass exodus.

Safety is an illusion, everywhere you go.

"now owned"

Bruh, you are so many years late to that news. Political activists, critics, and whatever, would actually use the site, and thus it was assumed Russia government dickbags were ddosing the site's servers pretty often.

I actually thought it wasn't even owned in Russia anymore...

idek, but i'm just laughing at the premise of "safe". Like the KGB's got a cute little tab about how Jill Whatserface on 10150 33 St in Fucksville loves to blog incessantly about her cat, and now she has to watch her back.

Like, who does OP think they're dealing with? Case?

YES I KNOW IT'S AN OLD TOPIC

(Anonymous) 2015-05-11 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Can anyone answer it anyway?

Re: YES I KNOW IT'S AN OLD TOPIC

(Anonymous) 2015-05-11 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the "now owned" made everyone think you were under the impression it was just recently owned by Russia. That... got everyone a bit sidetracked. :/ (It's happened to me too, dozens of times.)

I don't have an answer for you, unfortunately.

When you're asking people to help you, it behooves you to try and be more polite. You catch more flies with honey, etc.

Re: YES I KNOW IT'S AN OLD TOPIC

(Anonymous) 2015-05-12 10:48 am (UTC)(link)
This is incorrect. The best way to catch flies is with a mix of vinegar, apple juice and liquid soap.

Why'd you use it though? :p

What do you mean by your real name? If you left your address/phone/ or a card number that is not dedicated solely to online use and has little money, I'd change it if I were you.
You may as well change your name. Though names tend to be pretty common, so I wouldn't worry about that.

And remember Sony getting hacked recently. Ownership doesn't matter here.

Re: Is LJ safe?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-12 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I don't care about hacking. I care about what the Russian company will do. Do you have anything worthwhile to add about that?

Re: Is LJ safe?

[personal profile] solticisekf 2015-05-12 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
That was rude. :/

Also, fuck you.

Re: Is LJ safe?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-12 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
What exactly do you imagine that the Russian owners will do that any other company in the world wouldn't? Sure, they could sell your personal info to hackers (protip: your real name and IP address isn't such a hard-to-discover piece of info that anyone sane would pay for it). You've been using Russian-run LJ for literally years now. Do you think that they're going to publicly reveal the real names of their userbase? Why would they?

I mean, you're here in the comments being an asshole to the people trying to answer your vague paranoia. Maybe instead try to articulate what exactly you're afraid is unsafe.

Re: Is LJ safe?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-12 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
The Russian government could blackmail them into performing acts of espionage

I mean, it's not likely, but...

Re: Is LJ safe?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-12 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
No one has tried to answer my "vague paranoia".

I'm only being an asshole because every answer (save one) was assholish to me. No one has tried to answer my question in good faith. Yes, I guess I should've said I was aware that this isn't a new thing. I didn't realize everyone was going to be so hung up on that. But I don't think that means it's not worthy of an answer because I didn't think to ask about it back when it happened. I wasn't really in a mindset to think about internet security back then so I guess it is new to me. I would've been more than happy being directed to old stuff about the issue but no one's offering that along with their condescending remarks about how old the topic is. So, yes, I am frustrated by the replies and lashing out.

I am aware that the internet is not safe. I am aware that there's nothing I can do about the situation if they do have my information and want to use it. I very much regret using my credit card back when I did. I am aware that my data can be hacked. All I want to know is if LJ really is going to fold where the data will go and if the laws regarding my data are different in Russia than the US so I know what to expect.

Following SUP Media's acquisition of LiveJournal, SUP announced that the service would be run by LiveJournal Inc.; this newly launched company is based in San Francisco and continues to run the site under US law. (c)

You're xenophobic or troll.

Just go to you profile and change the info like everybody tells you.

DA

The clear answer I'm seeing in this thread is: we don't know. We also don't know why you expect random people on FS to know this information.

Why don't you google data laws in Russia?

Re: Is LJ safe?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-12 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
People have tried to answer you, it's just that you're refusing to see that your fears about the Russian LJ name/IP stealing are rather overblown. Like another anon said, that's not difficult information to find out about a person, anon. You've likely left it all over the internet just through casual websurfing, so making a fuss over what will happen to your precious info oh noees!!!eleventyone strikes most people are very silly.

Obviously you disagree, but snapping at people for not viewing your oh so serious predicament as seriously as you do isn't going to convince anyone to give you more helpful answers.

You deserve a Russian slap for that attitude.

Did you check their Privacy Policy?
Ownership aside, they seem to stick to USA law.

Re: Is LJ safe?

LJ is dead anon. It killed itself.

Re: Is LJ safe?

(Anonymous) 2015-05-12 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
No, it's not safe. In fact everybody who's ever been on LJ may as well kill themselves now, because Russia has already gotten your information and will rape and kill you in the name of the Empire when we nuke and take over your country.
