Oh god yeah. There was actually a minor kerfluffle when I was in library school because a librarian put a superhero comic in the kids' section... that had an orgy in it. (I sadly don't remember what. It might've been a Catwoman title.) GUESS HOW THE PARENTS RESPONDED.

Some kerfuffles are less minor and less funny. There's reports of dumbass judges claiming that someone who was making comics with adult material in it automatically convincting them of obscenity or something because apparently, comics are inherently kid's stuff.

Yeeeah, that shit sucks. Thankfully, I think it's kinda going down in my country, since Maus won a Pulitzer, and you NEVER want to give that to children. Medium != genre, people!

I remember one time my dad gave me a comic. It was part 1 of a two-parter. Obviously I got curious. So I looked it up. turns out paart two had an interracial gangbang.

Yup, comics are for kids yo...

Oh god. Yeah, we read Maus and How Loathsome in high school. SO NOT FOR CHILDREN.

(Though I have to give How Loathsome credit for introducing us to the concept of trans men. Considering the resources we had at the time, we could've done much worse.)

i worked in a library for a while and the comics were next to the children's books. ALL of the comics. i cringed every time i had to shelve something like akira or sin city in the same area as the works of dr. seuss.

Oof. Yeah, fortunately, the two libraries I've been in the past week, one had comics all to themselves, over by the mysteries and sci-fi. (Possibly there were some teen-specific titles in the teen room, which I haven't been in.) The other had two sections of comics, one with the kids and one with the YA. (And the kids section had NO big scary titles, it was all like Zita the Space Girl and shit.)

So at least that's a bit better?

I really appreciate my local public library. They have a LOT of comics in the teen/YA section (because that's the target audience for a lot of manga and Western comics). They have a good selection in the children's section (that may be where I discovered Yotsuba&!). And they have a fair amount of comics and cartoons in the main section.

They actually care where stuff goes.

Yeah, comics are one of the WORST things to try and organize in a library, in my opinion. I don't envy the librarians' job.

My only lament is that sometimes, libraries keep their teen rooms closed during school hours, even if the library itself is open, meaning we can't ACCESS those comics or YA books we want until the teen room's open hours. Annoying!

This is how it was at my library when I was growing up (they've since changed the system), made worse by the fact that they had a legitimately fantastic collection of graphic novels and manga especially given that this would have been in the late 90s

It was great. I was so traumatized
