I know I'm not your former friend, but I give this relationship a pass for similar reasons. The way I look at it, these are fictional characters in a world where cards become animate and felines can fly. Also, grooming-as-romance is a Japanese romance trope all the way back since the "Tale of Genji".

Do I approve of this in real life? Hell no! In fiction? I wish people wouldn't get so wrought up. If no one ever wrote anything questionable in their fantasy worlds, that would lead to a very boring experience, imo.
