Well yes? No? Maybe? A lil bit of both? I'm not familiar with the fandom, but I do remember in my side of things the other ladies where very well liked except for her. She came off as whiny which I can understand since she was a spoiled brat, but even I didn't buy her supposed "character development". Funny enough, I had this conversation with a friend that it didn't matter how much we hated her, she was right in wanting peace. But yeah, she was a pretty awful character. I also feel that way about Heero, though. Everyone was infinitely much more interesting than those two.

If we're talking early GW fandom, then a lot of it was sexism and very nasty sexism at that. Mainly because she got in the way of 1x2. Yeah, there may have been some people who disliked her because they thought she was a terrible character, but the most vocal hate was because she was in the way of a pairing.

Tbh, I don't really get the whiny or spoiled brat complaints. Admittedly it has been years since I watched it but she never came across that for me.

Aha I see. I never shipped 1x2 so that might be it. It's pretty sad when honest complains get drowned in between the "BUT SHE'S A GIRL AND I HATE HER" along with the "YOU JUST HATE HER BECAUSE SHE'S A GIRL" complains. Makes it hard to be taken seriously when there's some actually good points.

I'm going by memory but I do remember she was pretty pampered and it showed a bit*. Maybe not whinny, but she was spoiled, and it didn't help that everyone around her was pretty much kissing her feet in the beginning (remember when she gave Heero that invitation and everyone started clapping before he tear it down?). But like I said, she barely had any character development because there was barely any character at all. Same with Heero.

*Also I'm using "a bit" quite losely here since like I've said before, she (along with Heero) barely had any personality at all.

Admittedly I'm basing this off stuff I've heard about the fandom from people who were in it. I got into it late, but even then, you could see a lot of hate on old fansites/forums and such. I guess it really depended on where you were in the fandom?

She was pampered, sheltered and a bit spoiled, but I don't think one could consider her a spoiled brat. It was more of the brat part that threw me off guard tbh. Eh, I think both her and Heero had a bit more personality and development than that. But I will admit that the series wasn't the best when it came to writing characters.

Anyway, thanks for replying! It isn't often I get to talk about my fandom. This just makes me want to rewatch the series.

Oh I see. Same here, I never really got in time to be around the fandom and the only person I used to talk about it was a friend. I do remember the hate on the sites and stuff.

Maybe I'm being biased because I did find all the other characters more interesting than them. I did dislike Relena quite a lot back in the day, and didn't care enough about Heero to pass judgment hah! So I guess my views are a bit biased.

How do you know exactly why people hated her?

She is very, very, very easy to dislike because she is so obnoxious in the first half of the series. That's why I despised her, and I'd guess most other people too.
